EYE ON YOU Inspired by the surrealist movement, Eye on You aims to challenge traditional notions of racewear style by bringing a distinctly couture approach to the competition this year. The front of features an eye, a symbol commonly used in surrealist art to represent perspective, introspection and the subconscious mind, set slightly off centre. Using the artisan technique of tambour embroidery, the design has been intricately hand embellished with Japanese seed beads and the lower radiating lash lines are created using metallic thread, seed and bugle beads, sequins and glass crystals to create a contemporary and fashion forward piece of couture detailing. The piece was constructed using sinamay to block a tip and side band crown and a bound brim, overlaid with a fine layer of embroidered silk organza, and a colour palette of black and gold has been utilised to elevate the sense of drama. In an attempt to further challenge traditional headwear, the back of the brim has been cropped and replaced with a large satin bow, suspended below a lace up back running down the centre of the crown at the back reminiscent of a laced corset.
