The Western Australian training partnership of Grant and Alana Williams have topped off their Melbourne Cup Carnival with a second Group One victory to their name.

Donning the cerise and white silks for owner Bob Peters, Arcadia Queen showed her dominance in the Group One Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes to win by a comfortable one and three-quarters of a length margin over the Lindsay Park-trained Fifty Stars. The 12-time Group One winning mare Melody Belle finished third after running second in the race last year.

With regular jockey William Pike on his way home to Western Australia, Luke Currie made the most of the opportunity to guide Arcadia Queen to her third Group One success.

Co-trainer Grant Williams was overwhelmed to win a second Group One this Spring.

“It’s just brilliant. We set a target to win one. We’ve won two and it’s even more special being her,” he said post-race.

“It’s well documented all the problems that we’ve had with her but she’s come back and won a Group 1, it’s unbelievable.”

Jockey Luke Currie, who brought up his second win for Cup week, was delighted to be given the opportunity.

“I like to thank Mr Peters and Grant and Alana for giving me the opportunity today and Willie Pike for going back to Perth, thanks very much. I owe you a beer, I don’t think he drinks, so it might be a Red Bull.”

“These days are what they’re all about. There’s plenty of lows in racing, but the highs, are high. I think she’s pretty special. She’s so big and imposing. Just the way she comes out. As soon as you ask her, she goes. She was amazing today.”
