ANZAC Day Race Day a day of tradition and remembrance at Flemington

24 April 2025 Written by VRC

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) will mark a poignant occasion at Flemington Racecourse on Friday, as it hosts the 64th edition of ANZAC Day Race Day – a time-honoured race day that pays tribute to the brave men and women who have served our nation.

Flemington has a long history to wartime and played an important role during World War II as a training site. Today, it continues to honour its legacy by combining tradition, remembrance, and racing excellence in a uniquely Australian way.

On the track, the day is highlighted by the 167th running of the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m)—a race for three-year-olds that predates even the Lexus Melbourne Cup, with a distinguished honour roll including legends Phar Lap and Tulloch.

Hall of Fame trainer, Gai Waterhouse AO, in partnership with Adrian Bott, is aiming to equal her legendary father Tommy Smith’s record of six wins in the feature with three-year-old colt Format.

Racegoers will pause to reflect during a moving ANZAC Day ceremony in the Mounting Yard at 2:55pm, featuring two mounted troopers of the Light Horse Brigade and six members of the HMAS Cerberus Marching Contingent alongside the Catafalque Party. The ceremony will include the singing of the Australian and New Zealand national anthems and a moment of silence to pay respect to past and present servicemen and women.

The spirit of ANZAC will echo throughout the day with a range of heritage and commemorative activations including the iconic wartime game Two Up which returns to Flemington’s Front Lawn in a true nod to ANZAC Day tradition.

A collection of art and heritage displays will be across course with a special tribute to the Australian Light Horse Regiment which includes black and white photographs from the State Library of Victoria, artefacts from Running Rabbits Military Museum, and a stirring video display telling the tale of Australia’s greatest war horse, Bill the Bastard.

A life-size installation featuring a Waler horse and ANZAC soldier silhouette will provide a poignant visual tribute on the Front Lawn West.

VRC Chief Executive Kylie Rogers was looking forward to welcoming racegoers to this special day of remembrance.

“ANZAC Day Race Day is a cherished tradition at Flemington, the day is a powerful reminder of our history and a celebration of the values that unite us as Australians,” Ms Rogers said.

“We warmly invite everyone to join us at Flemington on Friday. Whether it’s attending the ceremony, exploring the heritage displays or simply enjoying the great racing on offer, there’s something special for all ages to experience and reflect on the legacy of our servicemen and women.”
