Apache Cat brings smiles and magic to Royal Children’s Hospital

17 April 2025 Written by VRC

In the lead-up to the 2025 Good Friday Appeal, much-loved retired racehorse Apache Cat made a special visit to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Parkville, bringing joy to young patients, their families, and hospital staff

With his striking white face and calm nature, the eight-time Group 1 winner quickly became the centre of attention, posing for photos, accepting pats and carrots, and showing just how powerful the connection between horses and people can be.

Apache Cat was joined by jockeys Damian Lane, Tayla Childs and Patrick Moloney, who handed out small gifts and spent time with children during the visit. For Moloney, whose wife works at the hospital, the experience was especially meaningful. “These kids have been through some really tough times,” he said. “It's really nice to see them have a smile on their faces today.

Now living out his days at Living Legends, Apache Cat continues to be one of the most popular residents. While his brilliance on the track will never be forgotten, it’s appearances like this that show the champion gelding still has a powerful role to play. His gentle presence was a highlight for many, and reminds everyone of the comfort, connection and happiness that horses can bring.
