Black Caviar Lightning Race Day to kick off Group 1 racing at Flemington

12 February 2026 Written by VRC

More than 10,000 racegoers will be on-course at Flemington this weekend, soaking up the summer sunshine as elite Group 1 racing returns on Saturday, 14 February for Black Caviar Lightning Race Day.

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) will officially unveil, The Perfect Run: Australia’s Undefeated Racing Legend, a large-scale, immersive and interactive exhibition celebrating Black Caviar’s extraordinary career.

The exhibition will showcase Black Caviar’s trophies, awards and limited-edition memorabilia, on long-term loan from the Taylor family, honouring her remarkable on-track achievements while also highlighting her cultural impact and enduring legacy within Australian sport.

VRC Members and fans are invited to share their favourite memories of Black Caviar, with selected submissions to be included in the exhibition.

The $1 million Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) is shaping up as a race for the ages, with a high-quality field set to charge down the famous Flemington straight. This year’s edition includes five three‑year‑olds, an age group with an exceptional record in the race, having won on 23 occasions.

The headline contenders include seasoned star Giga Kick and talented three-year-old colt Tentyris, who stamped himself as one to watch in the Spring with victory in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

Trained by Sam and Anthony Freedman, Tentyris was a late scratching at the barriers in the Group 1 Champions Sprint, with Giga Kick going on to claim the race in emphatic fashion.

The Black Caviar Lightning has long served as a springboard for international success, with past winners including Choisir, Takeover Target, Scenic Blast, Miss Andretti, and Black Caviar all going on to claim victory at Royal Ascot.

The undercard features the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes and the Listed Desirable Stakes, both over 1400m for three-year-olds, which serves as an exciting preview to the Australian Guineas at Flemington on Saturday, 28 February.

The winner of race 7 on the program - The Listed Elms Handicap (1400m) - will secure automatic entry in this year’s Group 1 $2 million The All-Star Mile on Super Saturday at Flemington.

Off the track, racegoers can embrace the Valentine’s Day spirit at Flemington with a series of heartfelt touchpoints across the course. A roving postman will distribute complimentary postcards for people to share messages of love near and far, and red roses will be available for purchase from The Club Stand Lobby, with all proceeds proudly donated to the Good Friday Appeal.

There will be fun for all ages on course, with a range of family‑friendly activities including a Bubble Workshop for Phar Lap Club members, pony rides, and face painting.

Flemington Pass (General Admission) tickets are $30 per person with children under 18 admitted free.

Gates open at 11:00am ahead of the ten-race program starting at 12:05pm. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit vrc.com.au.
