From Pakenham to the Cup: The Brownes’ big leap turns golden

13 August 2025 Written by Celia Purdey

For Emma-Lee and David Browne, this spring brings their biggest opportunity yet – with homebred mare Basilinna booked for a start in the 2025 Lexus Melbourne Cup.

The Pakenham-based couple train in partnership, blending their strengths and sharing the load. “We bounce ideas off each other,” says David. “Keeping the stable to around 30 horses helps us give each one the attention they need.”

Basilinna is particularly close to their hearts. She was bred and raised by the Brownes, the first foal from a mare David bought for Emma-Lee after she lost her favourite horse, Monarch Chimes. “Around the stables, she definitely thinks she’s queen bee. She’s quite hot and can be a bit temperamental,” says Emma-Lee, “but come race day, she’s a totally different horse. Her mind’s on the job.”

That job was spectacular in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes at Flemington, where Basillinna stormed to victory and secured a golden ticket into the Cup. “It was very emotional to get that win with her,” Emma-Lee says.

Now, the focus is on getting her to the first Tuesday in November in peak condition.

“She’s coming along well. The main thing now is finding the right races for her on the way through.

We’ve got a bit of a plan – her final lead-up will likely be the Moonee Valley Cup,” says David. “We’ll keep to slightly shorter distances at the start of the campaign, and that’ll probably be her main hit-out before the Melbourne Cup.”

For the Brownes, just being in the conversation is a dream come true. “I mean, the Melbourne Cup’s huge. Even as a kid in New Zealand, you always knew it was on the Tuesday. Everyone watched it. And then when you’re a bit older, you’re trying to knock off work early so you can get to the pub and catch the race,” says David. “It’s always been that iconic event you dream of having a runner in and now, to actually have one, you do have to pinch yourself.”
