Heiress set to take her crown at Flemington

13 January 2023 Written by Racing & Sports

Matt Laurie believes he has a stakes class filly in Heiress, who will debut at Flemington on Saturday.

Heiress, a filly by Thronum, will make her debut in the VRC Summer Fun Sprint (1100m), with trainer Matt Laurie expecting her to measure up in town.

Having just purchased lot 338 for $550,000, a colt by Pierata, at the Magic Millions yearling sales on the Gold Coast, the $75,000 Adelaide Magic Millions purchase pales in comparison, however Laurie believes Heiress will prove to be smart.

"I like her, I think she's a nice enough filly, she's trialled quite well, she's quite forward, she's sharp," Laurie said.

Rather than find a maiden somewhere, Laurie was happy to test the waters in town, with the filly showing nice ability at her most recent Mornington jump out.

"She's had no experience up the straight line so that's the only concern, but I think she's got her fair share of ability and we're happy to kick off in a Saturday grade race," Laurie said.

Such is the strength of Saturday class two-year-old races just over a month out from the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Sandown, Heiress is a relative outsider for the race, which will start at the earlier time of 10:30am due to hot weather.

Currently at $11, with debutants from powerhouse stables such as Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, James Cummings and Chris Waller, Laurie is striking at 24% from his last 50 runners and will be hoping Heiress can, in time, deliver his third black-type two-year-old winner.

"I think she's a potential stakes class filly, where I guess we'll find out in time but certainly in her training she's showing enough in her track work," Laurie said.
