Meet Good Ba Ba at Flemington

9 February 2023 Written by VRC

He was a Hong Kong star, and now Good Ba Ba enjoys life at Living Legends. Don’t miss meeting him at Flemington on Black Caviar Lightning Race Day, Saturday 18 February.

American-bred gelding Good Ba Ba won the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile for three consecutive years in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He still holds the record for three wins in a row, and also the speed record for that race at 1:32.71. He had great success throughout the 2007/2008 racing season when he won five consecutive Group and Listed races. All of these victories took place at the Sha Tin racecourse, including winning the Group 1 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup where he beat champion racehorse, Sacred Kingdom.

In 2008 Good Ba Ba was named Horse of the Year, Champion Miler (also in 2009) and Most Popular Horse of the Year in Hong Kong. He won 16 of his 50 races – seven at Group 1 level.

The gelding was sold at the Keeneland Kentucky Horse Sales in 2003 as a yearling to retired champion American jockey, Cash Asmussen, before being exported to Hong Kong. He began his racing career in March 2005 winning a 1000m Griffin race for newcomers to Hong Kong at Sha Tin with Douglas Whyte on board.

A world-citizen of racing, he raced in a number of countries throughout his career, including Australia at the latter part of his career.

Good Ba Ba’s last start in Hong Kong was in April 2011.  He retired with an impressive record of 50 starts for 16 wins and 9 placings. He is now enjoying his retirement at Living Legends.
