The countdown is on. With Melbourne Cup Carnival just around the corner, the finishing touches are being made across Flemington as months of preparation culminate in one unforgettable week.
For milliner Jill Humphries, this time of year is all about creativity and craftsmanship. “It starts months out,” she explains. “From when the Pantone colours are released, I begin sketching, shaping, and designing new headpieces that will define the season. At Flemington, it’s all about individuality — people want to make a statement, especially when they’re surrounded by 100,000 others.”
Fashion, after all, has been woven into Flemington’s fabric for more than 60 years, and this year’s return of the Fashions on the Field to the Front Lawn is set to be a showstopper.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Event Build Manager Jack Streefkerk and his team are transforming the course. “The Birdcage is really taking shape,” he says.
“You feel the pressure, but seeing it all come together is worth it — it’s going to be epic.”
From the Elms to The Birdcage, EGM Commercial Events Luke Kinniburgh says guests can expect world-class hospitality across 150 restaurants, bars and venues.
“We’ve reimagined every precinct, and this year, we’re introducing the Don Julio Golden Gallop — the cocktail of the carnival.”
