In a race where world-class jockeys race for every opportunity, Moloney knew how rare a Group 1 ride truly was.
“Winning a Group 1 is everything. It’s the pinnacle.”
It was an out-of-body experience — equal parts elation and relief. His first and only Group 1 at that stage of his career, and the fulfilment of a childhood dream.
The victory carried even deeper meaning. Trained by the late Mike Moroney, a mentor and steadfast supporter, the win was a tribute as much as a triumph. Moroney had backed Moloney from his apprentice days, entrusted him with opportunity, and once again handed him the reins when it mattered most.
“To win it for him, it was pretty special,” Moloney said.
At Flemington, where legends are made along the famous straight, Patrick Moloney’s Newmarket win remains a reminder that in racing — as in life — belief, timing and freedom can combine to create something extraordinary.
