OTT thoroughbreds to take centre stage this September

9 September 2025 Written by Celia Purdey

This spring, more than 380 retired racehorses will return to the spotlight – not on the racetrack, but at Boneo Park, where they’ll show off their style, skill, and the beauty of second careers.

This September, Boneo Park will become thoroughbred central as it hosts the inaugural Off The Track (OTT) Carnival – Victoria’s largest equestrian event dedicated entirely to retired racehorses. The Carnival promises to be a landmark celebration of the athleticism, versatility, and untapped potential of OTT thoroughbreds.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Mornington Peninsula, the event will take place across the weekend of 13–14 September 2025, showcasing retired racehorses in an action-packed program full of competition, learning, and community connection.

“We’re thrilled to support the inaugural Off The Track Carnival,” said Melissa Ware, RV’s General Manager of Equine Welfare.

“This event is an important step in driving demand for thoroughbreds as the breed of choice in the equestrian community. As these horses transition from the racetrack to a range of disciplines, their athleticism, adaptability, and work ethic continue to impress.”

With over $200,000 in prizemoney up for grabs – and special awards in each discipline – the Carnival is set to give these four-legged athletes the attention they richly deserve. Competing across four disciplines – Dressage, Combined Training, Showjumping, and Show Horse – the thoroughbreds will show off the diverse talents that make them such beloved and capable equestrian partners.

“The Off The Track Carnival is a celebration of the unique qualities that make thoroughbreds such fantastic equestrian partners,” continued Ware. “It showcases their incredible potential and highlights how well they adapt to second careers.”

The excitement has been immediate. Boneo Park CEO Fiona Selby said the response to the new event has been fantastic.

“It has been amazing to see so many proud owners of Off The Track thoroughbreds already enter the competition, to the point that we have started a waiting list for many of the classes.

“Boneo Park has been a proud supporter of Off The Track equestrian classes for many years, with dedicated classes and Best Performed Thoroughbred prizes at many of our premier dressage and show jumping classes, including the Off The Track Championship show jumping class at the Boneo Cup last October which was sponsored by the VRC. This new event provides us with the opportunity to bring together Off The Track thoroughbred owners across multiple disciplines to showcase the incredible athleticism and adaptability of former racehorses in a range of different career paths, and we look forward to extending this competition to even more disciplines in the future.”

The VRC’s support of the Off The Track Championship class is part of a broader commitment to recognising and celebrating life after racing. The club remains a proud backer of equestrian competitions that shine a light on the talent and versatility of retired racehorses.

While the competition is a major drawcard, the Carnival is just as much about the atmosphere. A Trade Village and Education Hub will give visitors the chance to connect with experts, discover more about OTT thoroughbreds, and learn how to get involved themselves. Throw in Fashions on the Field, family-friendly fun, and live music, and you’ve got the makings of a very memorable weekend.

One of the standout highlights? The Celebrity Challenge, happening on Sunday, 14 September. In this fast-paced 90cm showjumping round, teams of four will ride for charity – and for bragging rights. Spectators can look forward to some familiar faces stepping into the stirrups, with a star-studded line-up that includes Group 1-winning jockeys, top trainers and even Olympians.

“We’re excited to bring together such a talented and diverse group for the Celebrity Challenge,” Ware said. “It will be a fantastic display of skill and fun, as well as a way to give back to the OTT community.”

With hundreds of horses expected to compete, the Carnival is tipped to become a regular fixture on the equestrian calendar. And the enthusiasm has already exceeded expectations.

“We’re blown away by how excited everyone is,” Ware said. “Hosting it in September makes it the perfect lead-in to the spring season and gives us a fantastic opportunity to showcase both the quality of the breed and the life-after-racing pathway.”
