Saddling up for the 2024 Lexus Melbourne Cup

As the 2024 Lexus Melbourne Cup approaches, some of the world’s top jockeys have been confirmed to ride in the iconic race.

Jamie Kah partners with Point King after their Lexus Archer Stakes win and Zac Purton will ride Land Legend. Joining them are stars Ryan Moore on Jan Brueghel, William Buick on Vauban, Akira Sugawara on Warp Speed, and Kerrin McEvoy aiming for his fourth Cup victory on Absurde.

Ryan Moore

Ryan Moore has been booked to ride Jan Brueghel for trainer Aidan O’Brien. One of the world’s most accomplished jockeys, Moore is known for his cool demeanour and tactical acumen. He has won numerous prestigious races around the globe, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the Breeders’ Cup and the 2014 Melbourne Cup. He’s often sought after for major international races.

Kerrin McEvoy

Kerrin McEvoy

Kerrin McEvoy, aiming for his fourth Melbourne Cup win, will ride Absurde, also trained by Willie Mullins and returning for another shot after placing seventh in 2023. A highly respected Australian jockey with a long and successful career, McEvoy has won many of Australia’s biggest races. He is known for his experience and his ability to ride in a variety of different races.

Akira Sugawara

Akira Sugawara

Akira Sugawara will ride Warp Speed, a Japanese stayer with strong performances over long distances. Sugawara is a Japanese jockey who competes internationally and is a rising star in the racing world. His career took a major leap in June 2024 when he secured his first Group 1 victory at the prestigious Takarazuka Kinen aboard Blow the Horn. His riding style is described as ‘bold and tactical’.
