The first Tuesday in November – a day synonymous with colour, drama and emotion as all eyes across the nation turn to the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

And with a full return to racing for the first time in three years, the day certainly didn’t disappoint, despite the best efforts of the weather gods to put a literal dampener on proceedings.

In between the bursts of rain, Flemington was transformed into a sea of colour as racegoers flocked trackside to enjoy the 10-race card. Whether you were partying in The Park or breezing around The Birdcage, the action on the track took centre stage at 3pm with the 162nd running of the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

The Internationals had the form on paper going into the race, but it was the masterful Maher-Eustace stable who took the honours with top weight Gold Trip – an import himself 12 months ago but now under the expertise of the local training pair. The 57.5kg proved to be no impost for the classy five-year-old colt who gave Mark Zahra sweet redemption in the Melbourne Cup after losing the ride on last year’s winner Verry Elleegant.
