The Howden Australian Guineas headlines a stunning day of racing at Flemington along with the $1 million Inglis Sprint (1200m), a race restricted to Inglis Sales graduates and in recent years produced Group 1 winners Overpass and Benedetta. Also on the card is the $300,000 Group 2 TAB Blamey Stakes (1600m).

Race History

SIR THOMAS BLAMEY (1884–1951)

In the First World War, Major Thomas Albert Blamey became Chief of Staff to Lt-General Sir John Monash, Commander of the Australian Corps in France. Between the wars he was Chief Commissioner, Victoria Police. In the Second World War he was successively Commander of the 6th Australian Division, 1st Australian Corps, AIF Middle East; Deputy Commander-in-Chief Middle East; Commander-in- Chief Australian Military Forces and Commander Allied Land Forces South-West Pacific Area. Knighted in 1935, Sir Thomas Blamey was a member of the Victoria Racing Club Committee from 1947 until his death. He was promoted Field Marshal in 1950, the only Australian to have reached this rank.
